Off the back of Anim18, a celebration of British animation, funded by Film Hub Wales, BFI, British Council and Arts Council Wales, Film Hub Wales organised an interactive tour of Wales’ oldest animation, Jerry the Tyke (1925-27).
Screenings of Jerry the Tyke animated shorts we introduced to a modern audience in a zany production from Arad Goch, who present theatre for families and young audiences all over Wales and abroad with an electrifying musical score, composed and played live by Simon Lovatt. Screened with the cooperation of the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales, British Pathé and the support of Film Hub Wales.
The tour began at the Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff on August 8. It was a free event run as part of the venue’s Anim18 summer holidays animation workshop week.
This was followed by a screening at National Eisteddfod of Wales, as part of Sinemeas.
Film Hub Wales, for a third year, went to the National Eisteddfod of Wales, with a full programme of Welsh language features, special events and archive at the world renowned cultural festival, on 3 Aug 2018 – 11 Aug 2018.
We presented the three historical packages created during Britain On Film (Urban, Coastal FAN BFI a Rural), under the name A Sense of Place – Wales on Film / Man a Lle – Cymru ar Ffilm. If you grew up in 20th century Wales – or spent holidays in this amazingly varied country – what is the backdrop to your most vivid memories? This selection of films from the National Screen and Sound Archive Wales was digitised as part of the BFI Britain on Film programme. The collection exudes a rich and varied ‘sense of place’ from north to south, capturing the timelessness of rural and village life, the allure of the coast and the bustle of our towns and cities. People and communities, at work and play, are at the heart of this vivid heritage portrait of Wales – so clamber aboard and join us for a heartwarming tour!
As well as the interactive screening of Jerry the Tyke (1925-27), presented by Arad Goch with a sound workshop.
Also for the first time the Sinemaes tent went to Barry Island for a weekend event, Cinemor, where we consulted on the screenings and launched the Vale Venues project.
Sinemaes and Cinemor were led by BAFTA Cymru in partnership with Film Hub Wales, Chapter, Into Film, Ffilm Cymru Wales, The Royal Television Society, Wales Screen, BFI Net.Work, ITV Cymru Wales, S4C FAN BFI a TAC.
