WOW Women's Film Club: SKLP Samaj Community Centre, Cardiff
Facebook Event

To celebrate International Women’s Day, and in partnership with WEN Wales and the WOW Film Festival, WOW Women's Film Club will be hosting a women-only screening of SONITA – a documentary about rap music through the eyes of a young female Afghani refugee.

This film will be followed by a post-screening Q and A and discussion with three extraordinary speakers: Tatiana Garavito, migrant rights activist and campaigner; Onjali Rauf, founder of 'Making Herstory' an organisatoin which works to end exploitation of girls and young women; and Tanya Muneera Williams, one half of the extraordiary hip-hop duo Poetic Pilgrimage.

Sonita works in Tehran as a cleaner at a refugee centre that doubles up as a school. She lives with her sister and niece in a single tiny room, and dreams of being a superstar rapper. But Sonita doesn’t rap about love or fame, she raps about sexism and arranged marriage. After her family try to marry her off for money, the rapper channels her frustrations and tries to sieze a different destiny through music. Not without controversy - surrounding the film director's choice to step in and influence events - this is a fascinating film about a young woman who spits out rhymes in the face of oppressive traditions.
