2016 marked the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare – the UK’s greatest playwright, dramatist and poet.
We saw major world celebrations of Shakespeare’s life and works. Like his legacy, celebrations reached far beyond the theatre in order to reflect the extraordinary scope of his works. His plays and poetry continue to be adapted, interpreted and translated in new ways, continuing to remain relevant to contemporary audiences – especially in film.
In Wales, Chapter a Pontio showed some of the Bard’s greatest works on the big screen.
Chapter worked with the British Council to show family-friendly screenings, cult selections and discussions with academics and experts to examine Shakespeare’s relationship with Wales, while Pontio offered a unique one-off cinematic experience of Macbeth (1964) in Welsh from the BBC archive.
